Fire tests in the “Betuwe route” tunnels
Since 1999, Disc has been involved in the realization of the “Betuwe route”, the goods transport rail link between the Rotterdam port areas and the German border.
The layout of a transport rail can be separated into roughly four parts:
- The substructure. This is the layout of the ground underneath the rail over which the train rides.
- The superstructure. This is the layout of the electrical systems upon which the train rides. For this, think about things like the cable lines above.
- The technical safety system. For this, think about signs and crossroads.
- Engineering works. These are structures necessary for overcoming obstacles. For example, bridges, tunnels, and flyovers.
Disc has been involved in all over the above-mentioned aspects through the placement of safety specialists, railway safety experts, and fire professionals. The video clip shown here was filmed in one of these engineering works, namely the rail tunnel in Zevenaar. Train tunnels are equipped with tunnel-specific technical systems. These consist of:
- Pressure ventilators
- Sprinkler systems
- Communications systems
During the test phase of the “Betuwe route”, Disc was hired by ProRail to subject the technical systems for all of the “Betuwe route” tunnels to operational tests.
After intensive preparation, you see in the clip how one of Disc’s teams performs the test. The pressure ventilators kick in, the sprinklers activate, and the fire is quickly extinguished!
All tunnel tests were completed extremely successfully, and Disc is proud that it was able to contribute to ensuring the safety of rail transport in the Netherlands.
